I am considering buying the Alba RDVD1002 DVD recorder from Argos (£79.99).
Can someone please tell me if it is any good for what I think I will use it for!
a) I would like to transfer some video tapes onto dvd.
b) I would like to use it to record programmes from tv (rather than video tape them).
If this isn't a suitable machine can someone point me in the right direction please!
Cheers

Thanks for the link - still not too sure if its ok for what I want it for (as I have no idea about much of the techie stuff!) but I'm thinking maybe its worth trying anyway - can always be returned!!!0

Have a look at this one
Around the same money but has a few more features, and as you say you can always return it!!:D0 -
I wouldn't recommend any of those cheap and nasty DVD recorders.
If you want to use something more akin to using your old video recorder, get a model that can utilise DVD-RAM.
For example, the Panasonic DMR ES10.

May find it somewhere for around £130.0 -

I have had a panasonic dvd recorder for nearly two years that uses dvd-ram .Superb quality and reusable discs (bit expensive but good deals on new stock on ebay) is the quality so different on the cheaper models?? I was hoping to buy one for my dad for xmas
Thanks0 -
Cheaper models? Panasonic or other?0

It's not just the quality issue that is the decider, it's the extra functionality.
"Panasonic DIGA DVD Recorders offer all the benefits of the DVD-RAM format, like simultaneous recording and playback, random access, chasing playback, on-disc editing, and multi-format data compatibility that lets you record TV programs and still pictures on the same disc"
This is in addition to having the functions of a standard DVD-R recorder.
Also, the Panasonic has 500 line quality on LP recordings(2 x LP Horizontal Resolution (500).0
