Help with working our Bills to switch, Please!

Hi, I'm really new to this and desperately want to check out Capped rates etc as we can't afford for our bills to go up too much but I haven't a clue how to work out my bills! (Stupid maybe...!)

I thought I'd managed it but when I typed in the details to Moneysupermarket to get a comparison it stated that at present our bills cost us over £10,000 a year..... we are 2 adults, 2 small children in a 3 bed terrace, so I guess I worked it all out wrong!!

We are with Southern Electric on their General Domestic NSC Money savers.

Electric: From June 2007 to June 2008 we used 3091 Units (But I don't know what units are?)
We were paying £39 a month (It's now up to £55 from July as we are £67 in debt)

Gas: From June 2007 to June 2008 we used 9586.13 KWh.
We are paying £21 a month (And are in credit)

If anyone can work this out or can explain what I do I would be very grateful, I'm happy to supply other details from the bills if you need them.

Thanks in advance,
Alocins :j

Hi! Was going to work it out for you but you havent put all the info needed. Maybe it would be better if you went to the site yourself then you would know for sure that all details entered are accurate.

Ive only found out about it in last few days and its very good. Its https://www.energyhelpline.com when you get to the results you will then see a clickable bit top right where you click for current caaped rates. Hope this helps.

I capped mine Monday night and pleased i did as Tuesday they went up in price again

Some comparison sites (eg. uSwitch) allow you to enter your current monthly payment as a way of comparing. This might be the best option for you instead of worrying about units and kWh.

For future reference though, one electricity unit is the same as one kWh. However, one gas unit is NOT the same as one kWh.
  • Hi Alocins,
I tried using your exact figures on the energyhelpline site (using MY postcode which will affect figures) and it told me your current spend is £663 per year.
(which sounded slightly low based on the info you gave of £60 per month).

The best capped price came out with Scottish Power fixed to Aug 2009 @ £697, so an increase of just £34 per year.

You seem to be doing everything right, and will get better results using yout Kwh, so suggest you try again yourself at Energyhelpline:

    Hi alocins

To put some context around your usage the average home in the uk uses 3,500 electricity kWh units per year and 25,000 kwh on gas. So it looks like your energy use is below average, especially on gas.

I suspect your DDs on electricity were just short and the £67 accumulated over course of the year. Often you find suppliers only review their DD plans every six or 12 months.
