What type of rendering? Please help me!

I'm losing the will to live. Please can someone help me?

The back of my house has had no rendering on it for over 2 years, it's bare brick, crumblying brick! I've asked lots of people and they all have something different to say about different types of rendering. This is why it's still not been rendered. I've had so many bad jobs done inside my house i just don't want the same with the outside. I have had probs with some dampness and it's been dealt with.

I want it to be low maintence, ideally no painting as i have no man to do it for me! Awh. I live in a 3 bedroom semi-detached house outside Blackpool and very close to the sea and have been told not to go for certain types due to the weather/salt air. I don't really want a smooth finish as most of the houses i've looked at with smooth plaster you are able to see lumps and bumps.

Also, what sould i be looking for in a plasterer? What should he be telling me?

Thank you to anyone that can give this poor confused woman some help. Please help me change this  into this :j

Ok, I have asked hubs who is a builder and (we live by the sea as well).

The wall needs to be clean and free of dust, pva on this, then a scratch coat which is a coat of render which you scratch up before you put the finish coat on. The finish coat can be finished whatever way you like, you can pebble it or just have plain smoothed finish.

So I interpret this as make sure they clean your wall with a wire brush before they put the pva on.

I hope this helps, PM me if you need anymore help.
  • Thanks for your advice. I'm new to this and don't know what PM is? Sorry.

Can you ask him about Tyrolean please. I've been told it comes in different colours but when i've googled it it says it needs a layer of masionery paint. Conflicting reports.

I've just been given a quote tonight to do bonding, scratch coat, then an other rendereing coat & then Tyrolean on top. Is this ok, too much?

    Thanks again

It's private message. I will ask Hubs in the morning as I have only just logged on.
  • Thank you. I found out about PM after i'd sent that last message. Look forward to hearing from you

When you asked if this was too much, you didn't give a price, so we can't answer you in that respect.

However, and this is only my hubs opinion. He would go with render & cement, plus a high quality masonry paint (two coats). You need to find decent painters too. This should last at the very least 5 years, maybe more depending on your standards. It will be a lot cheaper than the other option.

Although he has never used Tyrolean, he doesn't believe that it will last for as long as promised.

    This story might help you.

When I wanted block paving, hubs didn't have time to do it and me being impatient, wanted it done yesterday. I walked around our area looking at the block paving and when I found one which looked professional and good, I knocked on their door and got the number of the people who done it. Hubs still put his oar in though, he wanted twice the amount of type 2 and irons put under the sand. I have to say that he was right, it has had several skips filled to the brim and has not sunk.

Anyway have a look around at peoples rendering, see how you think it looks and knock. People don't mind recommending a good tradesman and as ever, I would NOT employ any builder/tradesman until I have VISUALLY LOOKED at their previous work.

    I do hope this helps.

    hi

what i would look at is a type of render called K-Rend, it is the same principal as render but for a start it is silicone based so will not absorb water and it has a colour pigment in it, which the customer can choose, thus it therefore doesnt need painting i would not recommend sand and cement in this instance. It also has a 30 year guarantee.

tyrolean is a possibilty though, it does require a render of sand and cement, all tyrolean is, is a decrotive type of render where it is fired out of a gun.

K rend is becoming more and more popular although itis a little more expensive than sand cement, half of my external rendering projects now use this.

Weirdly someone else pm'd me about K rend and my hubs answer is the same. These people start up limited companies and by the time you want to ask them about something, they have disbanded and you are left with a guarantee which means nothing.

Its like any other rendering product if done to a decent standard to start with, it will last regardless of a guarantee, the same as any other building work.a good rendering job,and or dry or wet dash should last a good 25 - 30 years anyhow regardless.

Precisely which is why I am against super products which give that claim in 'the money back guarantee'.

Bit like the NHBC certificate. It's guaranteed for 10 years. That doesn't inspire confidence in me, I am afraid. Also one of the reasons I don't buy new houses, prefer ones that have been up & running for at least 100 years:beer:
