There is no such thing as unlimited. There are packages advertised as unlimited, but the service will either be terribly oversubscribed or you'll get your account cancelled if you get anywhere near the usage of a similarly priced bargain basement metered package.

$5.95 a month for 2TB of drive space and 20TB of bandwidth isn't a workable proposition. The datacentre couldn't run packages like that, so someone reselling or colocating couldn't. It'd cost the datacentre more than that a week to power that machine, never mind hardware costs and data transfer. The biggest cost in hosting is power.

Would just like to add, overcrowded servers mean downtime, more people on a server the higher the chance someone can exploit it, higher server load and memory usage which means higher chance of crashing etc etc. Also when you try to upload something you may find it will disapear or receive errors due to the actual server running out of space.

Also think of the costs, server rental alone in the UK is around £400 for a basic server. Remember you will get cheaper hosting if you host in the USA most of the time as UK servers are usually 2x the cost. However you will loose the benefit of having a UK based IP address which will help with SEO, most of the time the company will not be UK based, and you will get slower loading/download/upload speeds if mot of your traffic is from UK/Europe.

Agreed. Overselling is fine in moderation. Most people won't use their account to its full capabilities, so it's better all round if the company oversells a little, decreases prices and increases profits, and upgrades the box when performance starts to take a slight nosedive but before it's really noticeable to the end user.

£400 for a basic server? This I can't agree with.

This server is £160 a month, from a good reliable host. I've got a box with them (albeit much lower specced - P4, 2GB, 200GB, 1TB @ £50 pm) and apart from a datacentre power surge/outage and a dead motherboard/hard drive not long after that - so probably related - it's been rock solid.
    • Intel Core2Quad Q9500 (4×2.4GHz)
    • 4GB RAM
    • 5000GB HDD
    • 10TB Transfer
Now that's an unmanaged server but management won't be much more. Nobody could claim that a C2Q with 4GB ram, 5TB drivespace and 10TB transfer is a basic server. I believe the box i've pasted details of is on a 100mbit port, but gbit ports won't increase the price by all that much. Far from basic.

What kind of spec are you saying you've seen (or god forbid are paying for!) for £400?

Whoever is creating your website is the person to ask about hosting and how much it costs. They'll know exactly what the requiremnts are.

Then you can compare it to all the recommendations here.

Im not personally with them but look at uk2.net, fully managed with cpanel 4GB RAM, 1TB Data, 2 x Intel E5310 Quad Core Xeon 1.6GHz, however my friend who im not sure who they are with has a machine thats costing him around £600 a month !

Do you mind sharing who you are with ( via PM ) as im lookig to move over to a UK based company.

EDIT: Ok, mabey i was being a bit harsh, about basic, probs because im comparing directly to a friend of mine who has a monster machine, a few HDD's and something like 8 GB RAM + the extra of cPanel licences and management.

We're with A2B2 and I have absolutely no problems recommending them.

another 4GB of ram on top of the box I quoted would only be another £20 a month. I'm not sure just what a cPanel license gets you, mind you, so possibly a big part of the cost is the software licensing. I know a license from A2B2 is £15 a month apparently, but I'm not sure what limitations (number of sites hosted or whatever) there are.

Has your mate looked into colocation? If he's spending over £7k a year on renting a server he'll be much better off buying the hardware outright, I'd have thought.

Oh yea A2B2, had a chat with them over MSN :rotfl:

They do seem good, im thinking about purchasing a backup server from them.

Im not sure about my mate, but he's one of them guys who will only go with the big players such as rackspace ( who overcharge ). I personaly think the smaller companys provide a more personal experiance. Anyway, we kinda hijacked the thread ! :money:

Yeah, we did a bit. Sorry OP! When you outgrow shared hosting you'll be able to come back and read this. ;)
