thanks. I considered a basic account and looked at the basic accounts on moneysupermarket etc and really didnt fancy the look of them.

Have an online account with HBOS for sharedealing so have just opened a current account and savings account and that will cover my needs - tho if I can get them to set me up S/Os and DDs on the savings account as mentioned above ill ditch the current account.

I use the above account to pay bills, i have D/D and S/O set up. As someone has already said reject the cash card and cheque book or just cut them up.
  • Just off phone to online helpdesk who have said I will be able to configure standing orders tomorrow.
however the account cannot be used for direct debits.

    HMMMMMMM

What happens if i just setup a direct debit for the account anyway? will it work? will i be charged by bank?

ahh confusion - I was talking about the websavers account not letting me do DDs and SOs. cheers tho

Got all info I need now.

Cash will go weekly into my websavers account. Standing orders will go from there monthly to pay what they pay.

direct debits will go from my new current account, and SOs will move the cash from my websavers account into the current account the day before the direct debits are due off :T

Oh and my main bank account is moving to Lloyds with my primary savings account remaining at nationwide. Complex stuff :P but i know where everything is and how it works!

Have you definately had S/Os on the account?

Definitely and positively .... not only 'had' .... but 'have' ... as they're still there. The facility (as below) is on the left hand column - so don't know why it doesn't work.

Have always been suspicious of the allegation you can target the account with a DD. But it says so in the T&Cs ..... and the left hand 'Transfers / Direct Debits / Pay Bills and Standing Orders' tab actually shows a column for any DDs set up to hit the account ! Do tend to believe that in preference to call centre staff ..... but the DD isn't one I intend to try. However the odd SO works fine for me.

Are you able to setup / manage you standing orders online? I cant. I called and they were able to set one up over the phone - however I cant even see it online (girl reckoned it should appear almost instantly). Maybe need to leave it a few days.

Anyone able to confirm what would happen if I setup a direct debit to come out this account they rejected it? Will the company (for example national lottery) inform me its been rejected or would the bank charge me?

im thinking of just trying to setup a DD and seeing if it works ;)

Yes I can set up and manage SOs online .... have no problem with them at all.

If you initiate a DD to the account and the resulting Mandate can't be filed against it by your originator (Lottery etc) .... they should merely advise you the target account doesn't support DDs? They can't aim a charge at it until the Mandate is in place - so there should be no penalty for a failed payment, as it wouldn't get that far (at least 10 days between initiating a Mandate to hitting it with a payment request)

  • Quick question - does anyone have external s/os set up on the websaver account? ie going to Nationwide, RBS etc

Halifax telling me I cant do it
