Passport

Ok, this may sound a bit weird and I am not very sure where to exactly ask this, but a travel forum should do the trick.

Is it safe to give a copy of the front page of your passport to someone else?

Why would someone else want it?

Given that the front page of your passport contains zero information about you then I can'r see why they would want it.

Do you mean the photo page? If so, I have copies of them for my professional files and am expected to hold one (where available) so yes, in certain circumstances, it's OK.

You'd be better explaining to us who wants this copy and why, and also clarify its the photo page - which is toward the back - not the first page that is wanted.

    OK - more details:

Basically, I am non-EEA/Uk passport holder, so I can't check in using 'online check-in' with ryanair and have to pay the extra £8 per flight for airport check-in bit can claim them back. They need the flight details etc together with a copy of the front page of my passport. I assume that is the page that has my details, picture and visa entry etc.

    Would that be OK?

You've already shown it to them once at checkin, so giving them a copy isn't giving them any information that they haven't already seen. There's not a lot of particularly sensitive information on the photo page of a passport anyway (although it's got your name and DoB, it doesn't have any unique identifiers such as social security or national insurance number).

No - I need to send a letter with my flight details attaching a copy of the passport for them to refund me the amount back to my account. It's not them seeing my passport for boarding, but the refund has to be done by post.

Personally, I would not even have a moment's worry about doing this.
