Electricity Meter - who moves it, the supplier or your own electrician?
Options
I need to get my meter moved - can my electrician do it ( he's going to totally rewire ) or does it have to be the meter owner ie my electricity supplier ? If it's the supplier ( in this case edf ) do they charge ? I vaguely remember it being extortionate amounts to get a meter moved but thought that was gas, could be wrong though. Last question, if they do charge, would it make any difference 'where to' as in this case, I want it moved to where it comes in, ie by the front door, as opposed to where it currently is which is over the other side of the house.

Have you discussed this with your spark? What did he say? Have you called edf? What did they say?"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100

I think it is the supplier and it isn't cheap to move last time I checked it was over £400 and that was years ago. The meter doesn't belong to you so you aren't allowed to tamper with it in any way including moving it

If Joe Public (thats you and your sparky) was allowed to move the meter what is to stop you moving it and then "forgetting" to connect it up again (ho ho free electric).
I think the meters have a seal on them to stop this happening and if the seal is broken then criminal activity is suspected.0 -
Yes, thanks all. It does have to be done by 'the right people'.0

I work in the industry so here is the story. The distribution business (see elec in yellow pages) is responsible from the road to the main fuse (before meter). The meter operator (appointed by supplier) is responsible for the meter and connection to the main fuse. So depending on how you want the meter moved will depending on if you need one or both involved. If the main cable (before fuse) needs shortening or lengthing (expensive bit) then the distribution business will need to do this. The meter will be moved by the meter operator and this should be arrange with your supplier. Hope this explains it.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
