Just Found Out Little One is Lactose Intolerant. What Now?

First what formula milk to we need to buy now?
Can you get it on prescription?

But what does it mean for the future. Will she grow out of it?
Does it effect you much as you get older?

Both of my nieces were lactose intolerant, the eldest at the time was given some formula milk to drink (not sure what it was) and the younger one was fine on standard Cranvendale milk - something to do with it being filtered.
Both grew out of it after 18 months of age and are fine now!
check with your health visitor for details.

DS1 had lactose intollerance after bowel surgery at 3 months. He had Pepti milk prescribed which is a good job because it's 20 odd pounds a tin!!!!

He had his last prescription just before his 2nd birthday when we had slowly weaned him back onto cow's milk. Fine now!
Tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet...

You should be prescribed lactose free milk by the doctor, more often than not babies grow out of it once they are weaned, my friends little girl was really bad with it when she was a baby but she is fine with dairy now and she's only 2 x x

If they don't grow out of it, it is much easier to cope now - ds1 and I are both lactose intolerant. Lactofree milk is excellent if you don't like soya - although at £1.21/ litre it's not the cheapest. Allergy advice is well labelled on foods - and I find generally it's easier to make a lot of cakes etc rather than buy the special ones - although things like value ginger nuts etc are also dairy free. Apart from the milk and the odd pudding for ds1 we don't buy from the "free from " ranges at all.

Fleeting how old is the child?
My son whos 6 months is lactose intolerant
We get special milk on prescription for him
However I know that in some places Drs wont prescribe the milk as you can buy some in the normal shops, I think by cow and gate
If your child is below weaning age they normally reccomend early weaning at 17 weeks
My son hates the milk and I really mean hates
He had around 15 oz a day and thats cause I hide it in his food
Lots of children with this will have funny nappies due to the special milk
If you need jars for weaning (I make my own but use jars when going out) Hipp do some fantastic milk free recipes
My daughter managed to feed my son some chocolate mousse which resulted in vomiting and the runs for 3 days
If you need any more help feel free to PM me

As a baby, are they allowed to have rice milk or goats milk?

She'll probably grow out of it. I have done (I was 12 months) but it has come at least 3 more times. :(

DS1 was lactose intolerant as a baby, we used Wysoy formula milk which we got on prescription from our GP. It was disgusting to taste as it was very sweet but it did him no harm and when we started him on full fat cows milk at about 18 months he was fine. He is now a strapping 8 yr old who would drink a dairy dry given the opportunity!!

We wrote off to Wysoy (think it is Cow and Gate) and got free samples and a recipe book, might be worth you doing that to see which one baby likes best.

    Good luck

you said on another thread that this diagnosis was made by a cranial osteopath.

I suggest that you speak to your GP and Health Visitor and get it confirmed before you change anything

Oh sorry I didnt realise that ....our diagnosis was by the hospital and there was great emphasis placed that self diagnosis did not take place and any intolerance diagnosis had to be made by a medical professional. Good advice to get it confirmed by GP/Health Visitor. ALSO that will help with regard to getting the stuff on prescription.;)

My best friends eldest became intolerant, he grew out of it but she had him on soya based products during the time, loads of things available now so don't worry lil one will not starve.
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?
