Thanks, everyone - there are lots of good ideas here! We have been before but tended to 'hit' all the attractions listed in your average holiday info brochures, so looking for something a bit different this trip.

Did Chatsworth and absolutely loved it, inside and out. We've been to lots of stately homes but this is still my favourite hands down. Can't wait to get back to it and spend even more time wandering this trip.:D

Tissington Trail - may have to give that a go! We've talked about getting bikes for ages now and this would be a good time (and FLAT thank goodness!) to try it out by renting a couple.

I've copied and pasted all the ideas to have a search about online this weekend, I really appreciate the ideas!

...Also around denby area is the ritz cinema in belper (think it was voted the best cinema in midlands recently or similar). Its an old renovated cinema with double seats and stands for your wine. It has a bar and you can take your drinks in. http://www.ritz-belper.co.uk/ really good if you get some bad weather. There's also the river gardens in belper which are free to walk around. they have boats to go on the river for hire too. Would also recommend the 'all you can eat' menu at 'new mings court' chinese restaurant in belper which used to be every evening. normal menu is good and also do takeaway...
Ha ha it seems funny to see people raving about things which are on my doorstep! The food at New Mings Court is indeed extraordinary. Rather than doing it as a 'serve yourself' buffet, the food is all cooked to order. If you like something and want some more, they'll do you some more! The chicken satay is to die for. If you prefer Bangladeshi food, just up the road is Bengal Blues. It doesn't have an alcohol licence so you take your own which makes for a cheap night.

The Ritz cinema is much more of an experience than a soulless multiplex but you'll need to book really early to get a seat at all, never mind the 'sofa-for-2'.

Sofa for 2? And there's only one? Definitely wouldn't find this in a multiplex! :D

OK this has to be said. The best secret gem in Derbyshire is the A52 to NOTTINGHAM!!!:rotfl: :rotfl: :T  ;)
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

A walk at Dovedale is beautiful and kids enjoy too with stepping stones across the river. Make sure you have some energy for the steps though! Chatworth house is also great for adults and kids and has great playground and farm and the cascade is lovely. I went to Bakewell on carnival day and it was the best carnival I've seen...about an hours worth of floats and don't forget to buy a bakewell pudding. Gullivers kingdom in Matlock bath is good for kids and so is Heights of abreham, although a bit scary! Have fun!
