Family tent - 6+ - Suggestions??

We are a family of 6 - including 2 teens.

We are going for our first tent. Have done some camping with my sister - so not complete novice.

Does anyone know of any good deals on a biggish family tent? Don't want to sacrifice quality for price. So maybe something between £100 - £170.

Is there a good time to buy - ie when are the "sales"?

TIA!

Try freecycle - I have seen 6 berth family tents on my local one recently.

If you have a Decathlon Sports shop near you they sell some nice large tents for around £170 (to accommodate 6 and above).

Spend a bit more and go for real quality. You should be able to pick up a Khyam Rigidome Excelsior XXL for around £250. It's a great tent that is incredibly easy to put up and, best of all, has a huge amount of headroom. If not then check out Go Outdours who have a number of stores nationwide and have a great selection of family tents that you can look at. I know and use the Coventry store quite a bit. http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/1000000235562

Keep a look on ebay - we bought our 9 man tent on their a few years ago (2006) and got it for around £130.

It escapes me at the moment what make it is but it is a "well known brand"
It has 3 rooms and has a living area
It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice

We have a number of Vango tents which we find are really good.

I would look at 6-man 3 bedroom tent, if not a little bigger, especially if you are going camping for week/10days/2 weeks at a time. There are 4 of us and we currently have an 8-man tent, it gives us the living area we need if the weather isn't dry so that we can cook and eat in there. The extra bedroom space is storage.

When you are looking for a tent, I would look for sewn in ground sheets, it helps prevent water getting in, also for warmer evenings for the 'living' space to have an 'inner' it helps keep warm air in! also check for the weight of the tent. and where its going to go in the car/trailer etc.

The only problem we have is that if we pack away a wet tent, our garden isn't big enough to put it up - it'll be the local park! not life nor death but if you are easily embarrassed, something to consider!!

all the best and happy camping.

Go outdoors normally have some good offers on - a great Vango diablo 6 berth for under £200 the other week but they do change offers weekly. Vango is a good make as they offer a lifetime guarantee. Good luck!

I would up my budget personally and get a decent one that will last you a few seasons. Do a search on the ukcampsite.co.uk tent forum then post a message for advice if you're still not sure.
    Dry January: 31/31 days. :T
  • Best advice so far is Bunny82 about checking the forums at ukcampsite.co.uk as this really is THE best place to get advice about specific tents.

Another option is to look for a second hand Frame Tent on ebay if you like the style. The frame tent is a fair few years old in design but cant really be beaten at that price point for quality.

Only buy a named brands from ebay if you can. And if you have time get opinions from the ukcampsite forums about specific tents or tent sellers on ebay if its a brand you havent heard of before.
