Vista & Mobile Broadband WARNING

After having lots of problems with my 3 mobile broadband a friend of mine discovered the problem from a site (gadgeter.org or something). Technical experts at 3 were unable to resolve my issues after a month of tryingm, it took my friend 30 mintues!
Windows Vista has a security update which is powering down inactive USB sticks after 5 minutes. This means 3, and I believe o2 and Vodafone are suffering. There is no resolution at the moment, the market is small, but we need these 3 big companies to get together to ensure a solution is sought from either them or Microsoft.
It works fine with XP and other versions, but if you have Vista, hold off getting mobile broadband which is of the USB stick kind.

Mine works fine but then again, I've created my own Power profile where it doesn't put USB ports to sleep. Perhaps you need to look in the advanced settings of the profile you're using.0

surely, if you are using the usb sticks then you would want it turning off after 5 minutes of inactivity. With 3 you get a monthly allowance which is wasted if you leave the thing connected but are not actually doing anything.
My wife uses her 3 stick whilst enduring her 3 times weekly dialysis, but with 100 hours per month limit, if she was not actually on the web, then this powering down would be a benefit.
Sounds like a plus really0 -

I thought the limit was on data transferred, not how long you're connected. Certainly is on the data, not time, on my "3" mobile broadband.0 -
My flatmate has 3 broadband, its horrendous. Goes about 120Kbps which is only double the speed of dialup. The home broadband we have is 12Mbps, 100 times faster and £3 more per month...0

It works fine on Vista. Just because you had a problem does not mean it is incompatible with Vista.0

Your flatmate would get on better if he wanted to check his email on the train though, wouldn't he?
It's two completely different products for two completely different markets. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -

Can you use your home broadband whilst you're travelling to work on the train?0 -
That's quite an echo. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0
