I had a similar experience with a phone call from BT. They rang up to say that as a loyal customer they were going to knock £2 pm off of my broadband charges for 12 months. Very nice except what they were offering turned out to be £2pm off of the advertised broadband charge and I was already getting £5pm rebate and had four months to run on my existing contract. At no time was I asked if I would agree to be bound to a new 12 month contract but when I asked the question I was told that would be the case. A more trusting customer would have been conned.

I refused the kind offer. When my contract ended and I rang up to leave BT I was offered a £5 pm discount and saved even more by going elsewhere. I moved my phone service away from BT a little later. My decision to leave was more the result of that marketing call than any dissatisfaction with BT's service.

(Sorry mainly a broadband story rather than a phone one but I think it is on topic regarding the way BT treats its customers and how to respond)
