LPG installing and service

A few questions about conversion...

Is it necessary to go to an LPG installer to service a car that's been converted. I got an expensive quote from a firm that converts them, that would knock out much of the savings. I'd rather go to my local garage or do it myself.

Are conversions usually reliabke. I don't want to end up with expensive problems that need to be fixed.

How can I find a good converting garage. There are quite a few around, at various prices, but I've no idea who to trust.

Thanks!

I recommend you do some googling around.

I've only heard of one LPG installer that is any good and they are in Barking, Essex. But I have not had first hand experience.

We service cars that have been LPG converted, but we don't touch that side of it.

Obviously, if a conversion is badly done, you will get problems - some of them can be expensive.

Hopefully, someone with experience, will come on forum that can be more helpful to you.

This is my understanding of what occurs at an LPG inspection, however for a more reliable reply, ask in https://www.lpgforum.co.uk

    Who services an LPG car?
Answer: For normal non LPG items any garage can service it as normal, eg oil, air filter spark plugs etc.

The LPG tank, pipes, and electronics, can be checked over by an LPG installer, it's up to you how often you do this, a good installer will do this check for free once a year for those cars he has converted for his customers, otherwise you could pay upto 50 quid for this check, but it's only a few mins work, so 50 quid is taking the pee.

If you are competent you can inspect the system yourself. You're only looking for evidence of deterioration/damage to the pipework and that the pipejoins are all still good. Apart from the pipework there is the reducer and the electronic box, both AFAIK are not serviceable items. They might also check it is idling properly and adjust it, not difficult to do.

I had a Fiesta converted to LPG 4 years ago, tried to get it serviced but LPG specialists seem to go out of business pretty quickly in this area. So in 4 years it has not been serviced and it still runs well and reliably (and cheaply!).
  • The guy who converted my car said any normal garage can service the car - He does sevicing as well. My advice is shop around for a converter but make sure they are LPGA registered. Mt experiences are in my blog here http://www.lpgguru.co.uk/ hope you do well! If you get a sequential injection system you will do well to make sure its inspected by the installer and checked over by them as they are not easy to adjust manually.
