What I look for is that the webbing is complete in and of itself, and then the fabric is sewn to it. Some bags have the webbing sewn to the fabric, so the fabric takes the load - they tend not to last too long.
The branded ones tend to go for the soft "expensive" feel to the handles and body. OK for the gym, but books slay that kind of material.
