AVG for dummies - or at least me!

let me start by saying that generally I'm not keen on installing and uninstalling software but once I get used to something I like it. That said what id like is for people to avoid the obvious answers of "switch to ......." please. I know there are others out there but I've like AVG free for about 3 years so want to give 8 a go.

This weekend I'm proposing to upgrade to version 8 free using the link in the download section of this website.

I'm proposing to follow the following procedure:-
1. Download 8 to hard drive
2. Disconnect from net
3. Shut down 7.5 and uninstall
4. install version 8
5. reconnect and update to latest profiles etc
6. Look how to disconnect any excessive items AVG 8 does (link scanner is debatable as revisit heard it slows machine and I usually only revisit tried and trusted sites)

Oh forgot to say REAL step 1 will be cerate system restore point

Question at this stage is should this work from other users experiences? I use Xp home, IE7, hotmail for email, have defender and spybot also installed and running. Any conflicts?

Due to my aversion to uninstalls etc is there a simpler way. Will the computeractive forum link just update from 7.5 to 8 or is uninstall better?

Many thanks in advance and please be gentle with me!

why use AVG8 when 7.5 is fine??? i wouldn't bother if its not broke don't fix it

and AVG 8 is new and HAS problems (just google and you will see) so stick with AVG 7.5 untill you HAVE to move over to 8
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right

AVG 8 removes the old version for you :)

just start the install and it will do the honours, no need to install the AVG toolbar when it asks

I've had no conflicts with Spybot, superantispyware, malwarebytes or adaware , although it does identify crossloop as a risk

So you simple upgraded from 7.5 to 8. May I ask which source/link you were using for the upgrade (I was going to use the computeractive website link). Did you shutdown 7.5 from the system tray first or just "download"

Browntoa, did you just download from a link and if so which one. Iw as going to use computeractive mags download section. Did you shutdown the AVG 7.5 in the system tary first or just simply "download"
  • I downloaded it from here. I just installed 8.0 over 7.5, as it automatically uninstalls 7.5 as part of the process. It also uninstalls AVG anti-spware and rootkit if you have those installed.

If you chose 'custom install' when that option appears, then you can deselect the 'link scanner' option if you don't wish to have it. Otherwise, you can apparently just disable the browser plug-in if you find it slows performance.

ps, Don't press the obvious download button, select the download option two lines below (AVG server), it'll download at full chat, as opposed to download.com's regulated speed.

I upgraded from 7.5 to 8.0 don't un-install anything as Browntoa has said.
I used version 8 for a couple of days and found it to be more resource demanding (on my 4 year old Toshiba Laptop) and decided to remove AVG completely i now use Avast which is also free and for the last 3-4 weeks has run faultlessly and i also like the interface (usability on Avast).
