Really stupid question about laptop battery

Options
Hi all

Sorry to be so ignorant and apologies for posing such a basic question but how do I charge my laptop?

I am wireless yet not as I need to plug my charger in at all times. When the charger is in, I can work on the laptop but, as soon as I remove the charger, it switches off (as it has no power). When I click on the battery icon, it states 0% power, plugged in, not charging and the current power plan as Balanced.

How can I get it to charge so I can be properly wireless?

TIA

Kerry

In short, using it exactly as you are should charge it up. To charge one you simply run it off the mains adapter. Laptop can be either on or off but it takes longer to charge if its on.

Firstly make sure the battery is in properly and if it has been like that from new, that there's no plastic shipping tag on it blanking off the connections. Failing that, it must be faulty. Either the laptop charging circuitry or the battery is duff. Back up your information in case you end up replacing the laptop.

    Cheers Conor

I did think it was just the same as charging a mobile phone - it must be broken.

I will have to see about ordering another adaptor now then.

    Thanks again

It's probably not a problem with the power adapter: if the laptop turns on, then the power must be getting through. It's more likely to be a problem with the battery - either it's faulty or not inserted properly.

I suppose it's possible that the circuitry inside the laptop could be faulty, too (although a dodgy battery is more likely, I would have thought).

There has been alot in the press of late of faulty and counterfeit laptop (and mobile) batteries. It maybe worth checking on the website of your laptop manufacturs website to see if they have got any recalls on batteries.
(Saying that, it could just be a plain 'normal' fault, as it were).
I'd agree with esuhl, if the laptop runs from the mains via the adaptor then it is unlikely that the problem is with the adaptor.

Thanks. I didn't give myself enough credit for how little I know!

I should have known that it couldn't be the adaptor as I am sitting using the laptop (even though it has 0% power) when the adaptor is plugged in but the laptop turns off when the adaptor is removed!

I'm not normally so slow (well not always!)

Thanks again to all who replied
