Hi, me again . I am finally up and running on my Asus EEE on Linux and Mozilla Firefox.
The email bit has four icons for Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail and AOL but my email account is on Freeserve via Outlook Express. Is there any way I can access my account from this machine please?
Thanks for any help - always greatly appreciated.

Go to the tab 'work' and then you will see e-mail on the right hand side this is Thunderbird an application similar to outlook express you can then set up your e-mail account in the same way you would with outlook express...good luck

Thank you Paul. However I don't seem to have a mail icon either in the main Work section or in Work accessories, so I'm still struggling.
My machine was a display model and someone had set the security bit to block anything suffixed Thunderbird, so I have cancelled that, but it still isn't showing a mail set-up icon. Think I'll leave it for tonight and have another play around tomorrow.
I can't get it to run a virus scan either - or download updates. It is saying there is "nothing to do"I'm wondering if it matters what suffixes are listed as blocked (there are several others), as the antivirus doesn't seem to be active anyway.
I'll get there in the end!I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

I think if you go to the settings tab you can find Thunderbird on the add and remove programmes or you could download it from the web site-asus or thunderbird. Did you get a cd to reset it when you brought it. If not perhaps Azuz would send you one.0

Thanks again, that's something else for me to defer to the next day as I'm falling asleep here.
I did get a "restore factory settings" CD which I don't have with me at the moment (I'm on holiday), but it says I'd have to download it onto a flash memory stick and seemed rather complicated, so I was hoping not to have to bother.
I don't need regular email access as I am only a social user (and spam zapper ), so I was hoping there was some way of getting at it say once a day just by going into the Freeserve website or something. You can probably tell I don't have much of a clue about this sort of thing.

I am going home tomorrow so will be back on a sensible computer for a while
.
I'll leave this Asus here in our holiday flat (I do feel boastful when I say that but the novelty hasn't worn off yet) and hope it co-operates on my next trip!
Thank you for all the words of encouragement - it seems to be quite a complicated little machine as no-one else has come up with any ideas! Or perhaps it's because no-one else has had the same problem. Anyway, I really appreciate your input.:TI haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

When you get back to your EEE, switch it on and keep tapping the F9 key repeatedly during boot until the Normal Boot/Disk Scan /Restore options screen appears.
The EEE has a factory restore image contained on one of it's partitions and selecting the restore option will do just that.
There is a youtube guide here

HOWEVER all of your personal data and settings will be lost so you will have to set up your internet settings again.
Also be aware that the factory wireless drivers do not support the newer WPA2 standards and if you get the dreaded "pending..." message when trying to connect you will have to update the wireless using the "add and remove software" option on the "Settings" tab and only select the wireless update. Obviously connect to your router with a cable first.
I am not an EEE techie and most definitely not a Linux competent person but the F9 feature on this little beauty has saved my sanity several times.
Best of luck wth it."It's nice to be important but more important to be nice"

Wow thanks for that Bubbles, going to print it off right now. I'm going back up tomorrow so will give it a go.
I had the "pending" message a couple of times when trying to connect, but on the most recent occasion I clicked on Internet anyway on the offchance, and found I could get on!
Hopefully I will be around tomorrow evening then - if I'm not you'll know I'm still battling it out!
p.s. I've just watched the YouTube clip which was very helpful, plus several others about the EEE. Never thought about looking on there!I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Just in case anyone is following this or has the same problem, I have managed to get into my email account by going into the Orange website and putting my email address and password in the mail bit. I thought there had to be a way!
Worryingly my inbox was full of hundreds of mail delivery failure notices from all over the place - so I'm thinking someone must have been using my email address maliciously. These messages never appeared in my laptop email at home, so presumably my spam filter dealt with them.
