My Carpet needs cleaning - Who's best?

Our lounge carpet needs a seriously good (baby stuff!!). I guess that ChemDry is the one we all recognise but is there anyone better? I don't want to DIY because I want it done properly. Does anyone know how much they charge and are they worth it? Also, I have heard comments like "when you get your carpets cleaned you'll find they'll need cleaning more often - It's because of the chemicals" - Is this true?
Cheers for you help.

I've just used a local company and my lounge was £45.00. It was filthy with marks all over it (cream carpet, 3 kids!!) He didn't use shampoo but some other chemical. Thescience was explained to me but I didn't understand it. I have used different companies in the past and would say don't let them shampoo it as the shampoo attracts dirt.
Hope this helps0 -
Cheers Bobsa1.
It does help but what would help even more is if you could tell me the name of the company you used. Even if they aren't local to me at least I'd be able to find out about the sort of product they use.

I used Hayes Scott Cleaning (London-based) 0800 028 4533. He rocked up with the kit mounted on the back of the van and ran into the house with a hose.
Worked a treat - bringing a dirty cream carpet back to life. First clean for four years, so can't advise on how long it lasts.

First off, I'm biased as I am a 15 year veteran carpet cleaner!
The main piece of advice I would give is : ask around your friends and neighbours for a recommendation, there are a lot of cowboys in this business. In your situation I would recommend Hot Water Extraction aka (wrongly) as steam cleaning. Make sure you get an operator who can offer a drying time of less than 2 hours, with today's equipment this is easily achievable (I do it!).
As for ChemDry they are a franchise, each operator is responsible for their own business, some are good, some are bad just like any other business. A well trained, experienced, independent should be just as good.
Yes and no! It depends on the cleaning solution used, if a dirt attracting residue is left in the carpet then yes, if it isn't then no. I use a solution called a microsplitter which is safe enough to drink yet breaks the soil bond with the carpet leaving it easily removed with a fresh water rinse leaving no dirt attracting residue. I'd better stop I'm starting to sound like an advert!"Also, I have heard comments like "when you get your carpets cleaned you'll find they'll need cleaning more often - It's because of the chemicals" - Is this true?"
