You could try a bank that offers an interest free overdraft buffer (like Cahoot's £100), for your main account. That will save running two accounts. cahoot also offer text message alerts that you can use to warn you at certain balance levels, or if large payments go out of your account.

I don't know about other banks that offer text message alerts. But I do know that Nationwide offer mobile phone banking via WAP which you can use to check your balance.

That said, the best way to solve your problem is to BUDGET. Check out Martin's guide to budgeting the MSE way...

Buffer will not stop from going into overdraft and even below free limit and agreed limit.

What you need is some basic bank account with Visa-electron or Solo card. In theory with these cards balance is checked before each transaction and you are not allowed to spend more than you have. Most of banks have such accounts.

Whats the Solo Card about? Do all banks offer it?
Which Bank has a switch or solo debit card ?
    solo / electron card?

ISTR that the Abbey have a "sweep" facility which would do what you require.
