Getting to Stansted Airport from Nottingham

Hi,
We have flights booked from Stansted for a weekend in September. Friends were originally going to come with us and drive to the airport but they are not coming now so we have to get there (and home) on our own.

I have done some searching and it all looks a bit crazy.
Getting there Thursday afternoon/evening from Nottingham/Leicester (travelling separately direct from work) looks okay on the train, however coming back on Sunday night we would have to go via London (?!?) and the routes look to take ages and are expensive.

Even the National Express bus goes via Golders Green and is £25 each!

It looks simpler to hire a car (Alamo 4 days hire £47) and park it at Stansted for the weekend, but that kind of seems a waste.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?
I am after a route that is (hopefully) both cheap and not TOO time consuming.

I do think car hire would be your best option. You can try and hire a car for two one way trips if you don't want to leave it there over night. You should take a look at 121carhireuk.co.uk and 121carhireuk.com. They are both car hire comparison sites and will find you the cheapest prices amongst all of the major suppliers including alamo.

What weekend is it? There may be engineering works. Try http://www.nationalrail.co.uk again, putting in Nottingham and Stansted Airport, but adding Cambridge as a via point. That should bring up the direct route. Saver return fare is £42.30 not London, and £66 via London.

There are advance fares, but be aware that if the plane coming back is delayed, it isn't the railways' fault.

Not sure if you have heard there is a new car hire company opening up in mid/late september Green Motion oposite the old Ritzy Night Club in Nottingham. They have some free car hire offers and other special offers they are sending customers that register for their pre launch event. Not sure which week in September you fly but may be worth looking into it.

Plus they specialise in Green Car hire therefore if you hire a Polo from them it will give you 74MPG and is extremely low in CO2 emmissions. Something we all need to consider with fuel prices these days.
