Taxation Class...

I recently purchased an 03 plate Vauxhall Astra 1.7 LS DTI, on the documents the taxation class reads Private/Light Goods (PLG).

Originally the car was owned by the Ministry of Defence so when it was sold it was given a new registration plate due to security or whatever, now could this be why it is registered as PLG?

I would obviously rather not pay the whopping £185 road tax this class is currently costing me, so i wondered how or even if it is possible to get the taxation class amended so that the amount of road tax is reduced?

Really appreciate any information any one has?

I wonder if MoD vehicles are considered "specials" and therefore have not been classed by emissions (and therefore have no emissions data against that particular batch), the same as any limited edition vehicle. Your argument would be that it is the same as xxx model, but is it ? You will probably be banging your head against a wall trying to get it changed ..... but someone may know otherwise.

What would the tax be for a car that is based on emissions?

It's been reg'd in error then. The tax class should be Diesel Car.
should be £90 for 12 months. roughly, depends on what type of 1.7 it is.

But anyway, ask the DVLA to dig out the original V55/5 to get all the info they were supplied with when it was first reg'd.

Disabled, MOD, CROWN, NHS etc cars all have their own tax class.
  • I used to hate re-registering MOD vehicles for normal use. However, they should have been given age-related reg's and registered under the correct taxation class.
There are a few occasions where the vehicle is registered under PLG, so I would recommend you write to the DVLA instead of ringing the call centre who are trained to deal with basic queries, or visit your local office and ask them to check out the paperwork. They can request a copy of the mircofilms sent to Swansea for the log book to be issued.
;)I am not a complete idiot - some parts are missing;)

You can look up any make/model car to check what it should be costing you here (and what it will be costing over the next couple of years):

    I'm jealous if the diesel's only £90! I've got a 52 plate Astra, 1.6i petrol. Currently band E, costing £170. From April 09 it'll be £205 (band I) and from April 10 it'll be £210.

Worth it though, only had him a couple of months but I absolutely love my Astra (his name's Oscar). :D

Needing some help again, having managed to obtain a letter from Vauxhall confirming the co2 as requested by the DVLA i took the day off work to take along the documents they previously advised me i would need to change the class... only now they are telling me i need to obtain a COC form (Certificate of Conformity) as well, which they never so much as mentioned before hand.

I have contacted Vauxhall and they have given me the phone numbers of a couple of people, i have only managed to speak to one so far who advised me that a duplicate copy of the COC form would cost me a staggering £75...

Is this the norm or does anyone have any idea where i can get hold of one for a lot less??

  • You said in tour original post that you recently purchsed the car - was it private or dealer? If the latter, get them to cough up the 75 quid if they did the re-registering etc...
  • check your reg number on the DVLA website and see what the emissions are listed as.

PLG just means Private & Light Goods, My tax disc also states this and always has done.

Covers most vehicles upto 3.5 tonnes
