How do I paint a Melamine(?) table?

I want (or I should say my wife wants me to!) to paint a Melamine table. Can I just give it a rub down with fine sandpaper and then undercoat and topcoat with gloss or satinwood paint. Or is there a special paint for Melamine?
Any advice welcomed.

I saw some Melamine paints in B&Q recently. International and Ronseal do them. (havn't tried them though so don't know how good they are)

You don't need melamine paint.... ordinary oil based eggshell or gloss will be fine. I painted my melamine kitchen units, used an International Tile Primer (they now do Melamine primer too) rolled on with a foam gloss roller having keyed the surface lightly, and then eggshell on top, again with a foam roller.
The finish was lovely and very long lasting.

i tried melamine paint on my table and despite following all the advice on the back of the tin it never dried (left it for 5 days!) in the end we used kitchen roll to rub off the paint which came off instantly. i would strongly suggest doing a tester patch
  • Hi I have justed used paint and grain on my interior doors and it say on the back it can be used on melamine. Not tried it but thinking about doing my dining table as its got a few marks on that won't come off.
