hello,
one quick question...
I am buying a used car this week from a car supermarket type place. All the cars are sold without tax (pretty standard) but was just wondering, say I pick it up on Friday I can get insured from that date/time and the car is MOTd - how does it work getting it home. Obviously I am driving without tax but I do have the car's MOT and I am insured on it. Do they allow you a certain time to tax a vehicle as a new owner in this instance?

No, if you drove it home you'd be breaking the law

ask them to deliver it with their trade plates if you can store it off road until aug 1st ...shame to tax it near the end of july

why not just tax it a few days before you pick it up online? assuming you want to use it right away.

Because you have to be in possession of the V5, which is in your name and address, when taxing online (don't you?). Otherwise the tax disc would be sent to the old keeper's address.

Jammin is right, you can't tax a vehicle online until you have a V5 in your name.

Easiest way is to go pay for the car and leave it on site, go to the nearest post office and tax it.

Personally I'd just drive it to the nearest post office, or home and tax it the following day if it was late in the day.

I bought my car from a car supermarket and shock horror drove it on the road untaxed:eek:

I did have my insurance cert and the slip from the V5, in my Sat Nav I also had the post code of the nearest PO that sold tax, I also had it written down on a piece of paper.

Yes I broke the law but I could also clearly demostrate (if stopped) that I was on my way to the nearest PO to tax it.

So would I if it was, say, within 10-15miles. I might think twice if the car was quite old (and potentially unreliable) or if it was a long drive. I'd probably still do it though.

Yeh I've gone to the post office without tax a few times, not legal and you gotta watch as a warden could catch you whilst you're in the PO

The law in this respect is completely inadequate, not to mention the all but redundant nature of VED in the first place.

If I were you, and you are 100% sure you want that car, insure it from the 1st August online, you should get the certificate sent to you in advance, then when you have the certificate, go along and buy the car, get the V5 tear off slip, go to the PO to get insurance.

OR Tell them now that you want to buy the car, but you only want it IF they arrange to have it taxed on the day of pick up (arrange Aug 1st and 12 months tax from Aug 1st), and if you're smart you'll negotiate the tax to be a freebie.
