big problem with Npower and my meter

In November last year my gas meter was changed and a week later Npower sent a bill for an EXTRA £600 on top of my direct debits of £45 a month. They said this was just for last year and I probably owed them thousands for the years before that but they were kindly only charging me for one year! They said the meter taken out was imperial and they had been charging me in metric so I was only paying them a third of what I should. I am sure it was a metric meter but, of course, it has disappeared without trace. I have gone to the Ombudsman after many prolonged 'discussions' with Npower but he says Npower have all the records and says they are right.
Can anyone help? Does anyone know anything about meters?
The old meter number was G4A4500821 and the final reading was 04902.

If it had 5 black numbers it was a metric meter - was the last digiy in red?

You could ask them to prove that the removed meter was imperial - if it came to court I'm sure they would have to.
How many times did they read the meter and not spot this?
How long had the meter been in the house? That might give an idea.
What is your current consumption like? Does it match what they are suggesting you have used? Could you use this to help your argument.
There is an argument that you had as much chance to spot this as they did.

If they are right you'll find your bill almost triples, so you need to see what you can do to cut back.

five black digits but at some stage the bills only quoted 4 digits so I thought the first zero didn't count and this has gone on since 2003! The new meter is also metric and I have used almost exactly the same number of units this winter (beginning of Nov to end of April) as I did last winter and the winter before so they must be the same sort of meters surely.
