Instead of buying a specialised receipt printer is there any easy way of printing on a roll from a normal printer?

I would guess your only realistically priced option would be a dot matrix such as the Epson FX and similar series, if you can live with the noise and print quality (and possible lack of drivers under Vista?).
All of the professional continuous feed printers look to be very expensive.
I don't think it would be practical to try to modify a normal inkjet or laser printer because their design is typically dedicated to sheet feeding.0 -
My Epson Stylus colour 950 came with a roll feeder to print to paper rolls - specifically for long panoramic shots - so probably not exactly what you need - but they are out there - it maybe worth checking the Epson site.0
