And just for your info the botnets have to go through your ISP's DNS server to get to you (as NO ONE is directly connected to the internet) which is also firewalled then through your modem/router which again is firewalled!!!

Do you know anything at all about the internet?

Do you know that an attacker can address you via your IP address without going via DNS?

Do you know that if you have a USB connected broadband modem then there is probably no firewall built into it?

Please - if you want to provide technical advice here, stick to things that you understand.

jesus you just can't admit that a firewall will do nothing to stop an attack from a botnet can you......ITS THE ANTIVIRUS and SPYWARE thats more important....as a botnet can come in on something you download so there for your firewall is USELESS because YOU ALLOWED IT TO COME THROUGH THE FIREWALL

Then maybe you should understand exactly what a botnet is and how you catch it. Connecting to a computer by any means does not necessarily mean that you will get infected. As I said, firewalls mainly come into play once you are infected as a form of containment.

    We're not in disagreement here.

AV is important. A firewall is important.

Neither of us can predict what attacks will happen in future, so neither of us can say which is more important.

And no one was saying they aren't, just that in the case of a BotNet that the firewall is virtually useless until after the fact.

Just read the whole thread and you will see that someone was saying that firewalls aren't.

[Oh ok, just read Cat's last post - no problem, and no need to duel. Lots of people here with different backgrounds, so it's more about sharing knowledge than fighting!]

True, and a bit of lively banter is always good. But...

T'has been fun but I must retire for the night. I'm up at 5 so I bid you farewell and I hope we meet again for another entertaining discussion!
