BT home hub router at my pals, the laptop is used wired and has been set at WEP , the laptop wireless card is turned off. It is a wireless router so in theory surely I should be able to connect to the internet so I have brought my own laptop and while I can connect to the router it says limited access and does not let me on the internet.

Is there anything I can do to connect myself? I am staying for a few says and we all like using the internet!

turn everything off then turn on again in this order.....modem/router......then laptop

give each device time to switch on......i thought you need a password to connect to BT routers???

Yes I enter a password am connected, so it says, but with limited access. Meaning no internet.
    To clarify
My laptop sees the networks, I click on the one I want, enter the password and then get connected but with limited access.

As I did not set up the router ...turning it off is not going to mean a reset is it? All the info will still be there? I dont want to upset anything I cant fix!

no it will just be like turning your tv on and off......what its probably doing is not issuing an ip address

no need to reset just turn off leave for 10 secs then turn back on (restart laptop) once its all up and running again then re connect laptop........it maybe he has lost the internet aswell!!! hence why a limited connection

On some routers you can specify what MAC addresses are allowed to connect and to what. It could be that your laptops MAC address (the unique ID of all and every network device) hasn't been allowed in the router settings so that's why you have limited connectivity.

Get your friend to check the settings on the router and see if there is a "Allowed device/MAC" list or something that his machines have been added to but yours haven't.

Thanks for input.I have turned the ruter on/off but it did not change anything.

If I try to add my own computer I would need to find my Mac address and also find the router home page on the other laptop? I thought I had the series on numbers 192.168.etc but its not bringing up the page.

UKmike what/where is the moniter icon?

There is a WEP code on a label on the back of the Homehub, thats what you must use.

    On the back it has

    s/n .....
    bulk.....
    Mac.....

    then the
    BT home hub wireless settings
    Sidd...
    wirelesskey ....

entered wireless key combination into the bar and that did not bring up the router home page either!
