I had a tread fly off a tyre on a trailer just the other day, the tye was probably ancient

I think the idea is the tread itself separates from the sidewalls due to age at high speed. A visual inspection might not reveal that it is likely to fail in such a manner. In my GF's case it had not long passed the MOT.

Yup that's it, this tyre below had plenty of tread, no cracking, no bulges, no scuffs, no leaks and had never been kerbed (whilst in my possesion)
