I had a tread fly off a tyre on a trailer just the other day, the tye was probably ancient0

I think the idea is the tread itself separates from the sidewalls due to age at high speed. A visual inspection might not reveal that it is likely to fail in such a manner. In my GF's case it had not long passed the MOT.0 -
Yup that's it, this tyre below had plenty of tread, no cracking, no bulges, no scuffs, no leaks and had never been kerbed (whilst in my possesion)
