Ma & Pa visiting London - cheap trip ideas

My in-laws are visiting London from overseas in August. As they are from India everything here is going to seem extortionately expensive. As a born and bred Londoner I haven't done the touristy things since I was a kid. Any tips on discounts they can take advantage of for some of the paid-for attractions.

Obviously we will point them in the direction of the musuems and other free things. They are here for a month so not looking for the sort of pass where you do a whistle stop tour of all the attractions in three days.

A lot of 2 for 1 offers on this webiste. You need to have a train ticket (not Oyster) for that day-even for just 1 stop to get the offers. Print off the voucher and show ticket to get the offwers.

  • Hi Chinkle,

I'm adding the free London events link again, as it's great for checking out what's on for free in London. http://www.londonisfree.com/

I'm alos adding the British Library link, as they have an exhibition of the Ramayana at the moment, and events in the courtyard. It's a free exhibition and I popped int here last week. It's great. http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/whatson/exhibitions/ramayana/index.html

Also, you could check out Watch This Space at the National Theatre.

I've also found theatre tickets available for £10 - have a look on the Ticketmaster website and choose the £10 option.
  • Not free (unless you use Tesco days out vouchers), go to Hampton Court. You get guided tours by actors dressed in period costumes, the gardens are wonderful on a sunny day and you can have a little picnic in the park. Go to Bank of England museum, the Borough market, Green Park, and all the usual places. Though I would say don't bother with the Tower of London, it's expensive and is best seen from outside. By the way, what about a day trip to somewhere like Broadstairs?
