Set top Freeview Box

Hi there

Yesterday I went to Asda and bought a cheepie Freeview box for the study to replace knackered old Durabrand one. I bought a Goodmans GDB9 @ £25. Plumbed everything in, got a good picture on tv and then did a first time installation. Quality through the Freeview box is excellent and picked up most channels. (Hit or miss in this area and on occasion have to do a re-first installation).

However, no matter how hard I try the picture reverts back to 16:9 (not 4:3) and I cannot set the picture size to full frame on the tv. Any ideas of do you think I have a faulty box and back to Asda tomorrow?

what about changing it on your tv and not the box?

Tried that by going through the menu and not an option. Nothing wrong with tv so not changing that.

I had a problem with a freeview box from Asda. Couldn't work out how to sort out said issue, but they had a help number that you could call (sorry, can't remember if on packaging or receipt). Called up and they knew what the problem was, told us what buttons to push and we got it sorted in about 5 mins.

Yes, there is a helpline number but it is not cheap to phone. Maybe give it a try tomorrow from work as not prepared to phone from home at premium rates.

Most channels broadcast in 16x9, so if you are viewing on a 4x3 TV then the widescreen picture will be letterboxed across the middle of the screen.

I assume you have set the TV shape to 4x3 in the AV menu (page 14).
Maybe try the picture size (P size) button on the remote.

I had previously tried your two suggestions and had got nowhere. I have returned to Asda this morning.

Have now replaced with a Philips DTR220 and got set up last night no problem at all. I guess I was just unlucky that the Goodmans I bought seemed to have a fault.

Must say Asda CS made refund very easy with no questions asked. Was given a full refund as I didn't really want an identical replacement and wanted to see what else I could get.
