Hello i am 19 and have been insured with quinn for 3 months whilst learning to drive my car. I paid £910 a year for my insurance.
I past my test friday so told told quinn today to update there records. I was expectung to have pay a bit extra maybe a £100 but....
They want £748 as im a a "higher" risk driver that is £748 ontop of the £900 i have already paid.
If i insured my car after i passed my test it would be £1100. Yet im having to pay £910 + £748
What should i do

Why not cancel, accept the cancellation charge, and the refund should help towards the £1100 for another 12 months.
They aren't ripping you off, just their charge for a new full licence holder is higher than the competition.
You'll find it happens all the time in the car insurance market. Always cover as many options as you can when taking out a policy you don't expect to see through to the end unchanged. (By asking eg. how much would you charge when I pass my test, if I change car to a ferrari, want to add a learner to the policy etc.)0 -
I agree with Quentin.
The problem with "new" drivers is that they don't have someone else sitting in the passenger seat screaming "AAAGGGHHHH!!!" every time they are about to hit a tree; a learner driver cannot be in a car by themselves, so is considered a lower risk.
I know it appears to be unfair from your perspective (especially when an old git like me only pays £300 a year for a 2.2L car), but the insurers are pricing the policy according to the risk as they see it.
I was in the same position as you at your age; the only difference was that my preferred mode of transport only had 2 wheels. On the bright side, you at least have a heater in the winter; I froze various sensitive parts of my anatomy off!!In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move. The late, great, Douglas Adams.0 -
I posted recently about insurance for my 19 year old son..the moment he passed his test the quotes on a second hand small engined car went from around £800 to £1800 (my postcode is apparently high risk).
In fact the costs of insuring him either in his own car or as a named driver in mine are so high he has had to stick to using the bus as it is just not affordable.I can't see him ever being able to use his driving license at this rate.
However Quinn were no where near the cheapest for us on quotes, we found Endersleigh to be best so like the others have said it might be worth shopping around and if necessary paying to cancel the Quinn insurance and starting with someone else. Please please do it quickly though so you won't be tempted to drive meanwhile uninsured.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I often hear that tesco & CIS come up trumps for new drivers...Its near on 11 years since i past my test and have no idea who i went with..
I do remember paying £1400 9 years ago for a 1.4 tho.. People nowadays think insurance is high for young uns... **newsflash**, its always been high! When you get older you just forget how horrendous it was!0
