Car Insurance claim - help required

I'm insured with Norwich Union direct - fully comp, protected no claims etc etc. Involved in an accident today - not my fault. I was hit by a car and this pushed me into another car. Norwich Union have said they think it may be a total loss and have towed the car to a storage place. I currently don't have a car nor a hire car.
What should i be aware of? How can I be sure that I will get the full value for my car? I've heard that when cars are total losses, insurance companies give you nowhere near their market price, but the very lowest trade price? Can anyone help with this?
