losing speed through wireless connection

It seems that my 10mb blueyonder service will not run at 10mbs through my wireless network.

I am losing nearly 50% power upload/download.

The service works fine - wired through my linksys wireless router but as soon as I go wireless it takes a dive.

I have a belkin 54g usb wireless adaptor. That is where I think the problem may lie but I am not 100% sure yet.

Are any of the present wireless adaptor's up to the 10mbs service?

If anyone could help me further it would be appreciated.

Thanks

The wireless adapter shouldn't be the problem. If it's working correctly, it should transmit at 54 Mbps which is still considerably faster than your 10 Mbps internet connection!!

I'm not sure how fast USB ports but his maybe where the bottleneck is.

It may get to one side of the wireless receiver and then get slowed right down going into your computer.

The CPU has to do work as well on the USB ports to process the info.

  • Just been onto blueyonder technical and got some disappointing news....

Because I am using a 'laptop' the usb ports are powered differently from a desk top on a 'as and when needed' power supply. There is no constant power supply to my usb ports as there is with a desktop.

I may need to be looking at a lower power consuming usb adaptor it seems?

Am I making any sense as a non techie?

In answer to the above post I am using xp home edition with no security setup through my router.

Any further thoughts from the technical peeps here are welcome.
