Wanted; FREE electoral roll search

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to post this comment so that anyone who is looking for free electoral roll searching online can have the definitive answer.
The only place that anyone can search the electoral roll free is at their local council offices. There you can search the paper copies which are indexed in street order.
If you know the street name, local town and house number then you're laughing! However if you are looking for the name of a person but you have no idea where they are, then it will take you literally hours to search street by street through the paper copies. If you have no idea which town they live in then you will have to perform this type of search at each council authority. That will take you years to do as there are hundreds of local authorities.
Why am I posting this message? Well, as a researcher myself I have spent years spending thousands of pounds collating hundreds of years of data. And those people at 192 have done exactly the same. So why would anyone offer it free?
The only company to brave it amongst the internet world was b4usearch, and trust me on this one - they got shut down because the Independent Commissioners Office realised they were breaking the law.
So, everyone - there is no such thing as free electoral roll. End of!! Get it out of your mind and accept that the likes of 192 (or my organisation uk-peoplefinder.co.uk) have all invested shed loads to help people out there.
That is now off my chest!!!0 -

In many cases that is true - however, people are always free to ask for help here. In any case, I looked someone up on 192 and it gave me all their details for free! It doesn't cost anyone anything to ask for help here - or to be polite."Buy me, Lady", said the frock, "and I will make you into a BEAUTIFUL & WHOLE & COMPLETE human being"."Do not be silly", said the Man, "for a frock alone cannot do that"."True", said the Lady, "I will have the shoes and the bag as well".:rotfl:0 -

I disagree I think its greed and taking advantage to charge for otherwise free information, This idea may not be as useful as an electoral roll but have you tried searching for people your trying to find on social networking sites like facebook for example? This way is free0 -
you could take the 2 week free trial out thatwww.ancestry.co.uk are doing - you do have to give card details but you can cancel any time before the 2 weeks are up and not be charged I did this and found a lot out and cancelled without any problems0

My library stopped doing them years ago.I want my sun-drenched, wind-swept Ingrid Bergman kiss, Not in the next life, I want it in this, I want it in this
Use your imagination, or you can borrow mine!0 -
192 doesn't seem to be up to date. I tried searching and it only came up with results for 2008. I want to check if a relative is still alive.Don't mess with pensioners. :cool:0

No keep to the good old library where it is free, get the basics you can from 192, then for the finer details the library is the answer.
But as already pointed out, many stopped doing this years ago, and no good if looking for someone in Oldham if you live in PortsmouthEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
Last year I needed the address of the previous occupants of my house and the relatives of a previous neighbour who had died. I didn't have the address, but did know the two separate counties where they lived.
I contacted the main Library in Liverpool by phone, gave them the names and counties, they took my phone number and details. Within half an hour I received a return phone call with both of the peoples' details. I was then able to write to them and received the information that I needed.
So it is always worth a try to contact your local Main Library.0
