I seem to loose the wireless signal though, when i move away more than about 6ft away, thought this might be one of the causes? Its a belkin wireless router, if this helps?

You can add a USB 2 PC card (sometimes know as PCMCIA or cardbus card) to your laptop if it has a free slot.

Search on Amazon and you'll find plenty of branded ones (Belkin etc), www.scan.co.uk sell some much cheaper ones.

Just make sure you don't buy a PCI card, these are large cards for desktop computers!

However if you laptop is wireless and you are connecting to the Belkin router via wireless (not via cables), then it won't make any difference...

Doubt it very much, seems like another issue, not usb.

6ft does seem very short, but it'll be an isue with the usb dongle you're using rather than the USB port only being USB 1 I'd have thought.

hmmm.. belkin.. says it all.. cheap, and rather poor at a lot of things IMO...

a client of mine, just bought a belkin router, and the DHCP wouldn't work on it, let alone anything else, tried everything to reset it etc, but it was goosed.. right out of the box....

any other brand IMO is better than belkin!

They're maybe not a great brand but I don't think you could put 6 feet down to it being a belkin. :rotfl:

A USB2 PCMCIA card is easy to install (Just stick it in the slot and let Vista / XP run it's Hardware wizard.)
I've had a Belkin USB2 PCMCIA card for my laptop since they first came out and it's been great :D

You might get better result from your Wireless dongle when plugged in to your USB2 card..

IF it's a recent laptop then it's unlikely that the USB ports are 1.1

It may just be a case of updating the drivers, so going to the laptop manufacturer's website is probably the best option

HOWEVER I do have a computer that only has USB2 ports and the drivers are up to date AND I still get the message - so there's no guarantees
