Amazon Super Saver Delivery

Has anyone else noticed the curious way in which Amazon's free SSDelivery works? If your order includes an item that is not yet avaliable for general sale then Amazon will despatch the remainder of you order as soon as possible. Amazon state that their free SSD only comes into effect if you order goods to a total of £19.99 or above. It is perfectly possible to place an order below this amount, then add on say a book which is not due for release until 2006, and then once you have received the rest of the order with no charge for postage cancel the book.

IE order CD for £7.99 which is a discounted price not avaliable locally
order book due for release next year.

cancel book order

A release date search on Amazon on any current popular author should provide a list of books that are due to be published in the future.

Also if you do pre order books on Amazon that you really want, do check the price a couple of weeks before the release date. Amazon will often reduce the price but unless you cancel it, your order will go through at the original rate.

Have you tried this recently as I think you will find this is no longer their policy. The were certainly not doing it at the start of September and my daughter tells me she noticed it had stopped before that.

Perhaps its because of people doing what you suggest that the rest of us are being penalised.

Interesting. I know from experience that if one item on your order is out of stock then for SSD they hold the rest of the order until it comes back in stock. Maybe it's different for unreleased items.

Well it worked with an item I ordered on Wednesday which arrived today! I must admit I never order Amazon items if they are out of stock as their expected delivery dates can be wildly inaccurate.
When you put your order through, Amazon confirms that it will be sent in 2 or more separate parcels.

This just happened to me too, twice. One order they were having difficulty with getting one item, so I cancelled it.
The next is for a DVD that is due out next month, also cancelled that.
Both times I expected to get an email from them saying that I will have to pay delivery charges now, but nothing so far.
I'll have to remember this next time I want to order something under £19!

I am really annoyed now. Because they did not split my delivery, I had to cancel the item that was out of stock and just have the rest delivered. This caused me a lot of inconvenience because it then didn't arrive until I was on holiday so on the day I came back I had to drive all the way into work to drop one item off as it was my boss's birthday present and his birthday was the next day when I was not at work.

I'm waiting for stuff on SSD order but I just have e-mail saying whole order has been delayed further!

I'm waiting for something I pre-ordered that had "order before launch date and we'll deliver as soon as its released" or words to that effect. Ordered it with SSD and they now say dispatching on the 24th when it was released today!

I order a lot of stuff from Amazon and I've seen that there is some system operating.

If the separate parts of the order would qualify for supersaver delivery they will split.
If splitting would effectively cost no more they will split.
If you order something they do not normally stock (but order in) and its available early, they will split rather than store it.
If there is a high value item, they will split.

IE. I ordered a new monitor, one book, one DVD (pre order) and one computer game (pre order). They sent the monitor in 3 days, which was pretty good. They are holding the rest although the book and DVD are now available the computer game is not out until Nov.

I placed an order three weeks ago for a children's game and two books. One of the books is due for release next week. They didn't split the order. I have had an email saying it will be dispatched Tuesday. Not a problem to me as they are Christmas presents, but does show you might end up waiting for the preordered item.
