E-on back charges

Last week I had my'pay-as-go' type meter changed for a newer version. Yesterday I received a letter from E-on saying that my old meter was not set to current price changes and I have to pay £483!

Since I lived on the flat I have has numerous people come and read my meter but none of them have mentioned that my meter was under-charging me? The letter says:

"Unfortunately the people who read your meter don't always have the equipment to change the settings on your meter"

Surely this implies that they have the ability to change my meter yet for some unknown reason didn't. They have now set my meter to take £5 week for 97 weeks.

Is there anything I can do? In my layman eyes its seems it is there own fault and the consumer should not be charged?Any elp advice would be appreciated.

    Three questions:
    1) What fuel?
    2) What type of meter was your old one, did it use a card, key or tokens?
    3) How old is the price they are using? This year, last year, 2 years ago?
