Hi,
Sorry if this is in the wrong section but I would like to start web designing (to get off benefits and work from home) and have been trying to find a course at a reasonable price. The cheapest i've found to date is £499 and I can't really afford that with being on income support. Does anyone know of anywhere I could train for less?
Best wishes,
Charisma x

Thanks bazzlad but I know most of what is on there.
I would like a course with a qualification at the end.

Have you thought about studying towards a HND/Degree in a web related technology?0

hmm... web design qualifications... i don't think there is ONLY a web design course around, so you would probably have to study for an overall degree or alternative qualification..
HOWEVER.. and that is a big however, is there a real need for a qualification for web design. Check out the jobs that are around, and you'll find that what they want is commercial experience / a good portfolio.
So, what you need to do is learn web design, and then start doing some websites for local businesses, and create a portfolio. Make sure you have your own website / domain name to look professional, and have your portfolio online.
If you can't get any work, register a domain name and create other websites, for yourself.. I did, and it was useful to be able to show people what I can actually do..
Also, many web design jobs will actually be office based, so if you want to work from home, you'll have to freelance / own business it, and with that, you don't need a qualification, you just need to know what you're doing..
my advice.. buy a book.. old skool i know, but a book will teach you what you need to know (start with HTML, & CSS, the move onto PHP / MySQL for the dynamic websites), and you can keep it as a reference..
Do i have a qualification in web design? No.. do i get work on a regular basis? Yes.. because my portfolio shows what I can do!
Hope that helps

I agree with markymoo. I'm not a web designer myself but of the ones I know personally, none of them have a "web design" qualification. It's all reliant on showing past experience and portfolios. The actual qualifications range from no qualifications at all through to HND in Art to engineering degrees. None of which has any direct relavance to web design and is simply personal backgrounds of the individual people who just happened for one reason or other ending up in web design/building. All of them pretty much self taught or trained on the job. There may be transferrable skills in certain qualifications applicable in different areas of web design but I don't think employers are going to be looking for "Diploma in Web Design" and hire them as a web designer."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
