Any advice for the Garden Route?

My hubby & I will be driving the Garden Route/ Winelands in South Africa in October.

We have a safari booked near Port Elizabeth & 9 days later have 5 days booked in Cape Town.

Looking for advice on places to stay/ visit en route. We are 37 & 41.

We want to see whales & dolphins & I have read a guide book but would appreciate real advice from recent visitors or South Africans.

Thanks in anticipation. ;)

A definite stop would be Knysna, it is beautiful and worth probably spending a night there. I have been to George but that was a few years ago and I think is probably worth a visit, also maybe Plettenberg Bay. Hermanus is also a definite stop on the way, this is probably where you can see the whales. Somewhere along the route is an elephant sanctuary which I believe is fantastic (I will try and find out the name and location). Hope this little bit helps
