Supermarket Money Saving Tip

I pass on this little tip for what it's worth. I call it my money-saving supermarket belt scanner technique (impressive hey??) This works in all stores! Well simply put I don't waste that time standing in the queue at the supermarket. I do a last minute check of all the items I've on the belt and I ask myself do I really need each one. I then place to the side all manner of unhealthy, useless and impulse items I don't really need. Guess what I never miss those items, and over the yeasr I must have saved hundreds. I've learned it's not only what you put in your trolley, it's what gets scanned through the till, that counts.

Great tip for reducing spending and waste ;) As it's not strictly Old Style, I'll move it to the Shop Don't Drop board.

I disagree FrugalFriend. Although I can understand you are removing your impulse buying, you are leaving quite a job for the supermarket staff to undertake putting back your groceries. After all of the 'years of saving' couldn't you perhaps just try to not put these impulse items in your trolley in the first place?

I really don't mean to sound crass but I do feel sorry for the people having to put back what you couldn't bring yourself to buy after picking up off the shelves.

I sure hope you put frozen and refrigerated items back into their fridges and freezers if you dont want them, what I cant stand is people leaving items like this abandoned instore which then have to be thrown away its such a waste!!!

Also spare a thought for the staff who have trolley loads of stock to put back because people keep doing this. As a former supermarket employee I know this is very annoying and time consuming, I just dont understand this logic if you dont want it, dont pick it up in the 1st place!!!!!

Very anti social. I like to find things I want to buy on the shelves, not piled up at a checkout left buy someone who can't think about what they pick up.
  • FrugalFriend you are wasting everybodys time at the supermarket. If everyone was like you, the prices in the shop would have to rise just to put back everything the time wasters are moving around

I'm sorry Frugal Friend, but I agree too with the other posters. Not only is it unfair for you to expect the supermarket staff to clear up after you, but after you've repeated this process over the years, you would think you have learnt not to impulse buy by now?

When I read your post, I initially thought it was partially humourous - along the lines of philgees (sp?) post about free soap, water and toilet paper on the Freebies board. I will be disappointed to find you are not joking.

If you tried that "Money Saving Tip" in my place, you would be banned for LIFE!!! What would possess you to pickup items that you would "never miss"? I can understand someone who has placed an item in their trolly by mistake, then leaving it at the checkout, BUT you are taking the p!ss.
