My DS is not quite 3 and trained easily at 2yrs 4mths. He has been dry without accidents until a week ago, and then suddenly he is having "accidents"

I put this down to him getting engrossed in play & leaving it to the last minute, however he's now having "poop" accidents as well. He sleeps in pull ups although these are generally dry in the morning. Just after he got up this morning he came to tell me he'd pooped so I wouldn't have said he hadn't realised.

Not sure how to proceed really, never had this with my other 2?
Thanks to all who post comps :A :T
  • I'm probably going to get flamed by saying this but I think pull ups are a waste of money. To me you're either in pants or you're not, I think it sends mixed signals to children. I understand if you're going out for the day it's just easier ( no offense but easoer for the parent) to put them in pulls ups, but if you're organised, spare pants, clothes and some wipes there is no reason why they shouldn't be in pants. It's like saying to a child, you have to remember so go to the toilet at home, but it's ok when we're out because you have the safety net of your pulls ups. ( my opinion entirely others may have found them a god send and I do not intent to offend anyone by my post:-))

Rach29 As for pooping, that is a tough one. I've never had those problems. Is your son constipated at all. I know some children are put off pooing if it hurts because of that reason and regress a little. I'd suggest a chart for making sure he remembers to poo in the toilet.

Other people may have different opinions to me, but thats how I'd do it.

    Hope that helps.

Edited to add:I think 3 is still very young for total potty training too,Fab if it happens, but if there are still "teething problems" don''t worry about it too much.

    Thanks Sallylizzie,

I know what you mean about the pull ups, I had just trained DS when we went on holiday in March, We had a long car journey so I put him in pull ups "just in case" but he had other ideas. He point blank refused to pee in them no matter if we were in the fast lane of the motorway or half way up a mountain! cue many hurried roadside stops & a quick hop on the potty.

I do use them at night though on the basis that if he wakes I can put him straight in the loo & pop him back in bed. Having said that he's only woken 2-3 times in as many months, so maybe it's a false economy.

He's certainly not constipated if anything he tends towards the other way (TMI?) I think I'm going to give him a couple more days & then go & see the Doc just in case there's and underlying cause. It's only been going on a week.

  • I think it's always worth a trip to speak to someone if your child starts doing something they don't usually do. Even if it's just to put your mind at rest.

My nephew was the same with pull ups, I never used them with mine but I remember driving down the M1 and my sister saying in response to his call to stop for a wee... It's ok you have pull ups on, he was adimant (sp!) he wanted a toilet not a pull up, I thought to my self how confusing it must be for my sister to tell him to go to the toilet and not wee in his pants then the next telling him it was ok!.

Like I say in my edited post, 3 is still very young so I wouldn't worry at all by it. Pop along and speak to someone that's what they're there for. If he's not constipated tending towards the other way (lol) is it maybe that it's just catching him un aware? I'm sorry i can't suggest something more to help. Hope your GP/ health visitor can be more useful.
    Good luck
