You can sometimes slide a loop of packing tape in round the edge of the door although I supposed the AA man would have tried that.

Other possibilities are a new key from the dealer, or the broken glass option (does she have window cover?) Other thoughts, does her insurance cover lost keys? (our business policy covers building and vehicle keys so check car & house policies). Is the car in a public place and are the keys visible? If so then it wants sorting now as the insurance co will wriggle if someone spots the key and steals it

Where exactly are the keys in the car. I only ask because you may not be able to open the door once you have smashed the window if the car has deadlocks.

I wouldn't smash the window, the glass would be really hard to get out because it shatters into such small pieces. This is even if you tape up the glass first to stop most of the glass spreading.

Try asking a BMW garage near to you. If you have all the paperwork for the car they may be able to get you some new ones (if you have the code for your keys in one of the books).

We've done this, and Renault wouldn't cut us a key (BMW and others might) so we used a coat hanger to push between the gap in the door and push the remote locking button on the key.

The packing tape worked for me,a fireman friend did it,the fire brigade use this trick all the time.
  • BMW will be able to get you a new key but you need proof you own the car and two other forms of ID. It wont be cheap though, I had to pay about £100 when I had a new key made for my BMW.

thanks for replies...keys are locked in a BMW 5 series saloon in the boot! Apparently the AA tried opening the door with a wire but on this car there is some type of metal plate which stops them going near the locks.

telling insurance co that you have lost the key is an option, but suppose is fraud as really she has not lost her key.

Of no use whatsoever to you as you don't have the key but I once accidentally closed the boot on a friends Z3 after doing some work to the boot lock surround. Unfortunately I had failed to locate the operating rod correctly so although the central locking "worked", it did not open the boot.

Anyway the point was that we tried for hours to get in there but failed. As we could drive the car it was taken to the local BMW agent who forced the boot with absolutely no damage. He wouldn't show us how tho'. Have a word, if you can get it there they may have a solution.

They didn't charge by the way:T
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

she just called me to say car is booked in with BMW garage and they will chareg £99per hr....hopefully if its only a quick job they want charge her an excessive fee, thanks.
  • dont know if you can get into the boot through the rear seats?

But your best option would be (and cheapest) to put sticky back plastic on the window, rub it down well, then smash the window, most of the glass will stick to the plastic, then climb in and use the boot release or go through the seats if possible

Why bother doing this? You might as well get a new key cut then you will have access to the car and you will have a spare key.
