I don't want to spend money if I don't have to so do I need to pay for Ad-Aware as well? I don't do anything risky with the PC and wouldn't dream of clicking anything that I don't recognise as being safe.
If I screw my eyes up tight I can just about see where you're coming from

If you wanted another realtime scanner you could try threatfire http://www.threatfire.com/ i doubt you need another anti spyware realtime scanner as Norton claims to block spyware. But i would use http://www.filehippo.com/download_spywareblaster/ and http://www.filehippo.com/download_spybot_search_destroy/ to immunize.0

Yes, if you're running Windows, you need all the protection you can get. One anti-spyware app will often pick something up another misses.
You don't have to pay for Ad-Aware though, there's a free version available:

SpyBot is also worth having too:

Norton, ouch!
And try AVG anti-spyware, if you want a free real time scanner Spyware Terminator is good and free, I think one of the only real time scanners that is free.0
