bedroom carpet

Im going to be getting a new carpet for my bedroom. Its quite square so no difficult cutting, think my dad may be able to do it.
The measurements wall to wall are 11ft 9" by 10ft 10"

How much over these measurements should i purchase, or do thy automatically know this in the shop and add on themselves

hello, any decent carpet shop will sort out the measurements, it depends on the width of the carpets as some vary in width, hope that helps.

Hi - having just had the bedroom carpeted and falling into the same trap as you seem to - by measuring room only I will help!!

The standard size for carpet rolls is 4 x 4 metres. So get the largest length and assume that the other length will be 4 metres width so calculate the waste you will have.

Alternatively you can buy room size remnants or end of roll carpets from many places but beware that they will probably hammer you on delivery charges. It is very simple to transport a piece of carpet that size if you have a large car or a roofrack.

Felt back is a lot cheaper than hessian backed or "action backed". Easier to fit and no need for gripper rods of underlay - although it is general recommendation that these ARE fitted - it will prolong the life of the carpet immensely.

But if you want a cheap bit hassle free I have seen this seller on Ebay which seems good value - and in keeping with the moneysaving ethos of this site.

My initial budget was about £150 - wanted a decent carpet with underlay that would last. My room size was 3.3 x 3.5 M so worked it out to 12 M squared and had a price not taking into consideration the fact that it is sold off rolls so for that size I had to buy 16 m2!!

My price came in at £108 for carpet based on my measurements. Unfortunately when I turned to shop owner and questioned his all in price he let me know about how to buy carpet!! Carpet alone was £145 - 16m2 + £36 fitting + £20 gripper + £40 for Tredaire underlay.

His initial all in quote was £270 but I knocked him down to £240. Still works out at an expensive sounding £20 a square M but that was an all in price - fitted underlay - the works and it looks and feels great!!

I tried Allied and Carpetright and their prices were a joke!! 3 independents. 2 didn't bother acknowledging me so went for the guy that did. If I did it again I would check the free / local rags cos there are a lot of home carpet sellers and it may be cheaper.

The problem with feltback is you have to have a really smooth floor or lay underlay. I paid over 80 % more than my initial budget but it was money well spent I think.

If you are going to carpetright you get a discount for 10% from there website that you can use instore. You have to order it and it takes about 5 working days but worth the wait.

I got about 25% off at Allied by looking disappointed and then saying 'I really didn't want to spend more than £x'.

They gave in so easily I wished I'd asked for an even cheaper price:o .

Most carpets come in 4m widths so if your room is less than 4m in both directions then you should be able to buy a length that is equal (just a bit bigger) to the shorter measurement of your room. Some carpets are still made in 12 foot widths.
