I think vista is a little like ME the missus has vista personally I'll wait on window 7 see if that brings with it the things promised for vista.0

And I'd rather trawl forums than ring up customer support on premium rate numbers, not only are the forums free but it gets sorted out not ignored by customer services.
So is Technet - a full set of all Microsoft's support for all their products:

(I know we're getting way off topic now so apologies to all, but this is the natural law of chat forums). One thing that does seem a good idea (although still rumour stage at moment) is the modular aspect, the core OS down to 25 MiB and then only install the modules for what you need for the hardware/requirements you've got. Not sure I've heard of any other "features" though whether intended for Vista or not.

There were meant to be lots of things in vista that never appeared, a new file system for a start. I compare it to ME because like ME not many people have bothered most people are still using XP like they did with 98/2000 and M$ are bring out windows 7 quiet soon so many people will wait to see if its any better.
Hi endure,
Support is a word I'd use lightly with that site even Bill had problems.0 -

That was MinWin or WinMin (I forget) which was basically the kernal and a command line interface running a http server. As far as I know, that was just a tech demo of what could be done and won't actually make it into any part of Windows 7.
I do agree a more modular way of installing the operating system would be much better, especially if they do away with the 11 versions of Vista way of selling it. There should be 4 install options;
Home User
Media Centre
Business
Custom
What I would like to see is the unbundling of a lot of what comes pre-installed, most of the Live services, email clients etc and when you install and you're at your desktop for the first time you should be able to go to something similar to WU and pick and chose what you want to install, the latest versions, instead of having to sit through downloading updates for something you might never use.
They are being very coy about the development, I think that the bods learned a great deal from the Vista build up. Certainly, the developers I speak to who are involved in various projects, including both the teams for Windows remain more tight lipped than ever and won't even give one iota of information out about it.There were meant to be lots of things in vista that never appeared, a new file system for a start. Windows doesn't need a new file system, NTFS is still the most efficient there is. There was only ever talk of WinFS, but that wasn't a replacement for NTFS and it was absolutely disgraceful and got canned.
I do hope that MS unify all of their programs to share a common appearance, rather than office looking one way, msn messenger the other, wordpad, notepad, calculator etc. That would be nice, and I hope they take that on board.
In terms of support, you can't beat the MS newgroups for some top line advice and some pretty meaty discussions, just avoid the trolls!0 -
There was actually a winFS but it was very bad so it got canned. The uptake of vista is appalling compared to say xp 98 etc.
I'd disagree about NTFS on efficiency, its one of two things either windows can't use it properly hense the defragging, or its not that good.
I agree with your comments about the unbundling thats another reason I like linux easy to unistall what you don't use/need, and on some distro you can optimise specifically for your hardware.
I've always loved the way the users of windows know more about it than M$ do, take a look a sysinternals what awesome programs until M$ bought it up.0 -

From what I've read, the intention is to make it part of Windows 7 onwards. But I guess it's far too early to say anything for certain."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Back on track with the discussion, I'm looking into getting a netbook shortly. My laptop is a bit cumbersome for the train sometimes, and although when I'm on business trips it's fine, for my leisure ones it's a bit annoying.
I'm a bit torn on which one to get. I don't think I'd want that much storage as I wouldn't be keeping much on it, and as long as my phone can connect to it via USB as a modem and the wireless works it would be ok, so at the moment Linux vs Windows is my dilemna.0 -

Linux if it is preinstalled (like windows) will come preconfigured with all drivers installed and will work just fine and is nothing to be scared of. If you just browse the web and check emails then firefox and thunderbird will do the job, if you need to do a bit of word processing then openoffice will work as well as word.
I really do thank you all very much and I have read every post even though a lot of it is meaningless to me, not being a Geek! But, the above extract is more relevant for me. I love my computer. It's a Dell and I have just discovered it was del'd in Jan 02. I have had problems lots of times and never use anything but these forums for the answers. There are so many helpful Geeks around. The last time I had a going very slow problem it was fixed very easily with help from here and Ccleaner. Although I won't download it I will go see what Ubuntu is all about and will check out the alternative to AVG that was mentioned. I already have Open Office as I lost MS Office. Word was what I needed. They are on my system but I cannot get them to open. Thanks again.0
