edinburgh fringe comedy

Trying to book for edinburgh fringe this year. Apart from any advice on accommodation I would also like some advice about comedy shows. I want to take my two teenage boys( in an attempt to drag them away from xbox). Are there any comedy shows people could recommend and are there any age restrictions. My sons are 14 and 19.

I took my DS for 2 years, at 15 and 16. We just looked at the programme, and picked things we liked the look of, also looked at the half price hut. You never know with something unknown, but that was part of the fun and spirit of the fringe.

However, be warned, most shows not aimed at children have a 16 lower age limit, but they don't seem to bother about that if accompanied by an adult. The language and content might not be what you want your younger son to hear, but we found it was no worse than what he hears in the playground anyway. If 4 Poofs and a Piano are on - that's deff worth a visit.

The atmosphere at the edfringe is fantastic - I want to go now!

If you haven't booked accomodation, you will have trouble now, also, whatever you get is expensive. Consider staying in Glasgow - it's about a 40 minute journey by train, and Waverley is next to the half price hut.

True. Almost all the hotels are sold out and have been for a while, but you can still get very central apartments for 3 people for as little as £95 per night depending on the dates you want.
Just run a check on laterooms and don't hesitate to phone a few of the apartments direct if they end up showing as full on there.
    Good luck!

I recommend the half price fringe hut. It is a box office in front of the tourist info office on Princes Street. They offer half price tickets for loads of different shows, the only problem is you have no idea which shows they will have and the tickets are for that day only. Can save a fortune though.

Also there is the free fringe which runs in a number of pubs across the city. Entry to their shows is free (although the shows are hit n miss) and they have a collection at the end where you can chuck a couple of quid in the bucket of you liked the show.

Accommodation will be a problem though. Very expensive and most of it will be booked up.

Have booked Malmaison in Leith. Although it was expensive it was only a bit more than the travelodge and included full scottish breakfast. Do you know if 14 year old will be allowed in pubs in evening?
  • Depends on the pub really. A lot of them will let them in before 9pm but there are loads that will not let them in at all. Most venues will let them in plus all the outdoor drinking places that spring up in the festival will - such as the udderbelly and the pleasance courtyard. That is where I tend to hang around in the festival.
