Talk Talk internet loss last week

Options
I've done a search, and all I can find that's in any way related is the MS update and Zonealarm conflict.

I don't have zonealarm (to my knowledge), but use AVG for all my security.

I lost my connection mid morning on Weds 9th, got it back for a while on Thursday 10th, then it was down again from Thurs evening until last Thursday morning (17th). My modem would say it was connected (although did sometimes take a few tries), but I couldn't go anywhere.

If I tried to pick up emails, it would usually recognise that there was mail to receive, but on the odd occasions anything did happen, it was just the receipt of the same email (over 40 copies by the end of all this), then a crash as it tried to download the second email.

I've had no viruses etc, my security software is up to date (did try switching it off at one point in case there was an issue, but it had no obvious effect), the system is defrag'd etc - I can see no obvious reason at my end as to why this outage happened.

I've emailed Talktalk with no response, so I thought I'd see if anyone else had been affected before I go and spend money on a phone call.

With the zonealarm thing either you were connected to the internet or you weren't. Not the mixture of intermittent connections you seem to be experiencing. So I think the whole MS update/Zonealarm issue is a red herring for you and just similar timing but nothing to do with problems you're having. I assume the email you're using is Talktalk's as well (I'm on TT but never used their email or anything else so no idea if their email servers are having problems, don't have any reference to TT on my computer at all) so my first assumption is that it is a problem with TT themselves and their servers.

Have you checked here to see if there's already a registered problem/maintenance in your area? http://www.talktalk.co.uk/talktalk/servlet/gben-server-PageServer?article=MAIN.UK.TALKTALK.STATIC.OUTAGES

As an aside for potentially useful information, is your security therefore AVG Internet Security or is it just AVG and you're assuming it has a firewall? Also what email client are you using (e.g. Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Outlook)?

Thanks for the link - I did look on the site, but didn't come across this page.

They have a general loss of service issue between 14th and 18th, so that's probably it and I was unlucky enough to be affected for slightly longer.

It is well hidden. Took me a while to find it ages ago (I now keep a live copy of it on my home page, www.netvibes.com, along with other useful things such as my email hosts service status so I don't have to keep remembering where those kinds of pages are in future, I simply need an internet connection and login to my homepage, assuming netvibes isn't down of course).

A friend of mine using TT dial-up service was experiencing difficulties during that period and rang me for assistance. I proved her computer OK and told her to contact TT. "Nothing wrong this end " Standard reply ! She perservered and finally got someone to admit there MAY be a fault and gave her another number to dial-up. After that, satisfactory service resumed.
Why oh why do they always persist in their attitude that they are right and you MUST be wrong when it's quite evidently their fault ?
