in Credit cards
For several years now I have been refusing to sign chip and pin cards, writing in the signature slot instead "SIGNATURE VERIFICATION BY PHOTOCARD ONLY".
I have recently been in contact with Barclays, Barclaycard services, Abbey and Trustcard because all of them state in their terms and conditions that the card is invalid unless signed.
I have yet to have a machine refuse my card due to lack of signature, and on the rare occasion I have had to sign, nobody has noticed my strange signature on the card!
The main difference between pin and signature is that for a fraudulent pin transaction, the card issuer is responsible. For a signature, the seller is responsible.
From my point of view, if my card is stolen, the person trying to use it fraudulently would have to have a face transplant rather than spending 20 minutes in a coffee bar practicing my signature.
Photocards are driving licence, bus pass, passport etc.
The above banks just state that their terms and conditions etc.... Can anyone justify their stance, that I MUST sign my card for it to be valid
