we haven't had a bill either!

I've been living in my current property for 2 years now, and I hadn't received an electricity bill until 2 weeks ago. When I moved out of my previous property I gave the electric company my final readings, told them where I was moving to and that I would like to stay with them at my new place. I moved in to my current property, told them the meter readings, so as far as I'm concerned I did everything that I needed to do. It might have something to do with my postcode 'not existing', I have had a lot of trouble with companies like BT because they don't know where I am but I now have a bill for 2 years worth of electricity which I can't afford.
I remember reading in a newspaper article about bills that are more than a year old but I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly. I think it said that if the electric company fails to bill you, you only have to pay them 1 year's worth of usage. I've tried searching on the internet about this but can't find anything so does anyone know if this is true? I don't want to pay if I don't have to!

Where did you look? Energywatch would have been a good place to start.
How many years back can they still bill me?
You may also have found this question if you'd have looked there
I can't get them to send me a bill - what should I do?Contact the supplier straight away to ask why they have not sent you a bill or taken the payments from your bank account. If you still do not get an answer from the company, you should contact them again and tell them to treat your query as a full complaint - in writing works best.

If you still cannot get a bill, you can ask energywatch to help.

Did you get a closing bill for your old property and where was it sent to?
You cannot simply say that you want to stay with your old supplier at your new address. You 'take on' the existing supplier and then of course you can set in motion the change to your old supplier(assuming that the new property had a different supplier)
You say that people have trouble with your new postcode not existing. You should be aware that the '12 month rule' is only where a bill has not been produced. Not having it delivered doesn't count - otherwise many would deny getting a bill.
You might 'have done everything you needed to' 2 years ago - presumably on the telephone and not in writing? - but you haven't appeared to have done much since then.
Whether you can afford to pay for the 2 years electricity you have received is not the issue, your question is what do you have to pay?
Well if there is anything outstanding from your old house, you are liable for the lot.
If the bill you received 2 weeks ago was the first the company have produced then they can only go back 12 months. In fact I would be surprised if they 'tried it on' and attempted to backbill you for 2 years as they know the rules.0
