I am pleased that the little character " | " has led to much debate, it means I wasn't being picky.... ;D I never resize windows but have done so to see the effect & your quite right.
I'm sure almost everybody most of the time will use the site within a full window, so I think it should go!!

Maybe it wouldn't be so annoying if there was a "|" bar at the beginning of the line as well - making it symmetrical0

Do you mean my Mozilla is giving a different colour scheme to IE? That not only is the bar black instead of red (which looks fine anyway), but that others on IE haven't got the purple, pink and lime green colour scheme?
